I began fishing at a very young age and loved it from the very start. However, when I was just 7 years old, my father suddenly died. With no father to take me fishing, there were uncles and family friends that stepped in, and I was able to continue my fishing tutelage. That’s when I first picked up a fly rod. I have never looked back.
I was probably about 16 when I was able to afford my first fly rod. It was a fiberglass Fenwick 8’ 6wt and of course the reel was a Pflueger Medalist, but I soon realized that having just one rod limited me in terms of where to fish and what species I could target. My problem was that I couldn’t afford another rod, so when I graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in civil engineering, I began building my own rods from blanks. Most of the rods I own, I built myself.
Over the years, not only have I built my own fly rods but this passion has extended to building fly rods for family and friends. Now that I have retired from a successful career in civil engineering, I have begun to market my rod building skills to others. I don’t expect to get rich from it. I only hope to pass on my love of the sport by putting high quality fly rods in the hands of other like minded people.
